How do layover flights work with checked bags?

When you purchase a connecting flight, checked baggage is usually forwarded to your final destination, and will change planes when you do. The agent at the check-in counter will usually ask if you want your luggage checked through to your last stop. However there can be exceptions, for example, if you are switching airports during a layover, or if your ticket involves multiple airlines. In those cases it is possible that you will have to collect your luggage at the airport where you arrive and check in the luggage again at the airport you are departing from. We always recommend confirming with the airline upon check-in whether your luggage will be checked to your final destination.
